Paula Deen's Real Women of Philadelphia

Awhile back I announced an exciting opportunity to become the next big cooking star. Paula Deen teamed up with Philadelphia Cream Cheese on a nationwide search to discover the "Real Women of Philadelphia."  This exciting contest to find four fabulous female home cooks has created quite a stir (no pun intended!) The four very skilled and lucky ladies will each win $25,000 and work with the community to create a special cookbook featuring all of our favorite recipes made with Philly.

So far over 5,000 home cooks have submitted wonderful videos of unique recipes they created using Philadelphia Cream Cheese!  The recipes were divided into 4 categories: appetizers, side dishes, main dishes and desserts.  On the Real Women of Philadelphia website you can view any of the video entries.  I have thoroughly enjoyed watching many of these videos and seeing the creative ways to incorporate the cream cheese in the recipes.  We aren't just talking cheese cake... How about "Blue Peach Pizza?"  You're curious about that one, aren't you?  Or Oatmeal-Apple Cream Pies?  There are so many talented home cooks and they are so comfortable in front of the camera! What is even more impressive to me is the sharing and interaction on the community forum on the site.  Conversations range from cream cheese to cooking to child care. The women are the site are wonderful and warm so check it out and join in the conversation. Paula Deen also contributes her thoughts, recipes and entry highlights on the site.  Now y'all don't want to miss all of the fun!  I couldn't resist throwing in a "y'all...."

For Sons and Daughters Without Fathers

Happy Remembrance Day

I was inspired to follow in Michael Ruhlman's footsteps on this Father's Day morning.  He posted a very simple and heartfelt post on his blog with photos of his father.  Like me, he lost his dad and Father's Day for those of us without fathers is about remembering.  It can be sad and a bit heavy-hearted.  His post was dedicated to Father's Without Fathers.  Mine is dedicated to Sons and Daughters Without Fathers....

My dad was killed in an airplane crash when I was 11 years old.  He loved to fly his Cessna 310 in air-shows and was in an accident while practicing for one in California.  On July 25th, 2010 it will be the 30 year anniversary of that fateful day. It was tragic... more than you know. I guess he was fortunate that he died doing what he loves... but we all wish it he had stayed around just a little longer.

I'm was very lucky to have had such an adventurous and fun-loving father.  He was that guy... outgoing and a "guy's guy" with a personality that was contagious.

Here is my dad in his favorite cowboy hat... a weekend warrior - driving a team of horses on our Christmas Tree Farm in Northern California.  And yes... those are chimps riding with him (long story but I told you he was adventurous!)

Richard Merrill was everyone's friend and he was a great dad who did what he could to make the universe revolve around his little girl.  Like everyone, he wasn't perfect and made his mistakes but at the end I'm lucky to be his daughter.

Mom?  Are you trying to give me champagne in this photo?  That actually explains a lot. . .

My dad is survived by his brother, Ken... the best uncle anyone could have.  He has been like a father to me in many ways and even walked me down "the isle."  Well, more like a dirt path since I was married next to a waterfall in Kauai.  He has been like a father to most of us in my family. We're lucky that he also has all of the fun-loving, adventurous (also a private pilot ... he once had a full grown 500 lb tiger as a passenger in his airplane ....another long story) and caring qualities we loved in my dad.

So, Happy Father's Day to you Ken... and thanks for filling in during those special moments ... birthdaysgraduations, christmas's, marriage... when my dad was couldn't.  I love you!

For those of you who find yourself this Father's Day without your father . . . I wish you a very happy day of remembrance filled with only sweet memories . . . not the sad ones.  And I hope you had someone else who was there for you during those important mile-markers in life.  Not all "fathers" are biological but they are just as special and should be celebrated.

If you feel like sharing a memory about your own dad, I would love to read about him and your memories.  Just post those thoughts in the comments section below.

And .... Happy Father's Day Daddy!

We miss you.

Homemade Popsicles!

Homemade Popsicles!
Photos by Zoku and Williams-Sonoma

I've loved popsicles my whole life!  It's possible that I love them more than ice cream.  To this day whenever I have a cold, I send my husband out for two "medicinal" remedies.... hot and sour soup and popsicles!  The downside is the commercial packaged popsicles are loaded with sugars, food colorings and other chemicals.  They just aren't good for you. Yes, there are some "fruit" bars on the market that are a little better but even those aren't great.

The other day I was in my favorite place ... Williams-Sonoma... and there it was... a popsicle maker.  I had to have it.  I also had to have the book on display next to it called Pops! by Krystina Castella that featured unbelievably creative recipes!  And everything was so beautiful with whole fruit slices set into clear fruit juices.... or how about frozen cocktail pops like a mai tai or pina colada pop!  Or chocolate dipped pops?  Blueberry cheesecake pop anyone?

Krystina's website has several wonderful recipes but I encourage you to get the book if you really want to get serious about popsicles!

Great merchandising Williams-Sonoma - you had me at hello!

The machine is called a Zoku.  It's only $50 and you can freeze six pops in under 10 minutes!  How cool is that?  And it doesn't need electricity either!  You just put the base in the freezer, pour your fresh juice or yogurt or ice cream (creamsicle pop?) into the base and about 9 minutes later.... voila!

I squealed with delight.  Actually, I'm not kidding.... I really did.  Good-bye food dyes!  Good- -bye fake chemicals and sugars!  Visions of organic fruit bars were dancing in my head.  My 5 year old squealed with delight when I brought it home and explained we could make all our favorite popsicles at home now.  What a fun activity for kids!

We'll be making our first batch of popsicles later today.  And now I've added a popsicle section to this website to feature all of our favorite recipes.  I know it will be full of them in no time so stay tuned . . .
